Zuma’s Daughter Steps Down as Explosive Allegations Emerge of South Africans Being Drawn Into Ukraine Conflict

The daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, has resigned from Parliament as pressure intensifies over accusations that she may have been involved in enticing South African men to join Russia’s efforts in the war in Ukraine. Zuma-Sambudla—who had represented the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party since June 2024—submitted her immediate resignation as the controversy escalated.
In a statement confirming her exit, MK Party national chairperson Nkosinathi Nhleko revealed that Zuma-Sambudla had pledged her complete cooperation with ongoing inquiries being conducted by the appropriate authorities. He added that the party’s leadership had agreed to her decision to withdraw from the National Assembly and relinquish all public roles.
Magasela Mzobe, the MK Party’s Head of the Presidency, emphasized that her resignation should not be interpreted as an acknowledgment of wrongdoing. He described her move as a demonstration of discipline, noting that she recognized the urgency of addressing the country’s concerns regarding the safe return of the young men caught up in the crisis. According to Mzobe, her priority now is to assist state institutions working to uncover the facts.

Earlier this month, the South African government disclosed that 17 South African men, aged between 20 and 39, had sent distress messages claiming they were stranded in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region. An affidavit filed by Zuma-Sambudla’s half-sister alleges that the men were misled into believing they were traveling abroad for well-paid employment and security training in Russia, only to find themselves pulled into the ongoing conflict.
