Legendary Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey has passed away. She died in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). She was 89 and just months short of her 90th birthday.
Nortey, born on February 1, 1937, was a pioneering figure in Ghana’s entertainment industry with a career spanning more than five decades.
She was widely known for her powerful portrayals of strong-willed matriarchs and appeared in numerous acclaimed productions, including the films Sinking Sands and Beasts of No Nation, as well as classic television dramas such as Obra and Osofo Dadzie.
She is survived by five children, including actress Sheila Nortey.
Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues, fans, and media houses across Ghana, remembering her as a trailblazer who helped shape the country’s film and television landscape.
