SOUTH AFRICA: President Cyril Ramaphosa Booked Off Medically Following BRICS Summit Return

PRETORIA — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has temporarily withdrawn from all public engagements following medical advice to rest and recover upon his return from the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India.  

The South African Presidency confirmed that the 73-year-old leader returned to the country on Monday and was immediately advised by his medical team to step back from scheduled duties. While the official statement did not disclose specific details regarding the nature of his illness, executive responsibilities and public appearances are being delegated to respective Cabinet ministers where possible.  

Dual Leadership Absence

The President’s sudden medical leave coincides with the absence of Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who is also resting following a recent medical procedure. With both top leaders temporarily away from public engagements, Cabinet members have stepped in to ensure uninterrupted government operations.  

Global Engagements & Local Context

The timing of the President’s recovery comes during a crucial period for South Africa on both international and domestic fronts. Internationally, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola will represent South Africa at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York. Domestically, the political calendar is intensifying as South Africa prepares for nationwide municipal elections set for early November.  

The Presidency expressed confidence in the government delegation carrying out official duties during President Ramaphosa’s brief recovery period.
