Military Takeover in Guinea-Bissau Draws Strong Concern from AU and ECOWAS

Leaders of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM), and the West African Elders Forum have condemned the recent military takeover in Guinea-Bissau as “regrettable,” expressing profound apprehension over the situation and urging an immediate restoration of democratic governance.

In a joint communiqué issued on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, following the announcement by the military that they had assumed “full control” of Guinea-Bissau, the AUEOM, EOM, and West African Elders Forum decried what they described as a “blatant attempt to undermine the democratic process and reverse the progress achieved to date.”

The statement further called on the African Union and ECOWAS to take all necessary measures to reinstate constitutional order.

It also highlighted concerns regarding the detention of senior officials, including those responsible for overseeing elections, urging the armed forces to release them without delay to enable the electoral process to continue to its proper conclusion.
