EU–AU Leaders Converge in Angola for High-Level Continental Partnership Summit

The seventh edition of the European Union–African Union summit commenced in Angola on Monday, convened under the overarching theme, “Advancing Peace and Shared Prosperity Through Robust Multilateral Cooperation.”
This two-day gathering not only commemorates a quarter-century of EU–AU collaboration but also coincides with the 50th anniversary of independence for Angola and several other African states. The meeting is jointly presided over by Angolan President João Lourenço and António Costa, President of the European Council.

High-level representation includes European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for the EU and H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, for the AU.

Although the EU remains Africa’s foremost trading partner, the relationship has been tested by the expanding geopolitical presence of Russia, China, and the United States across the continent.

Addressing participants on Monday, von der Leyen remarked, “In an increasingly competitive global economic landscape, the interdependence between Africa and Europe is more vital than ever.”
