Ghanaian entertainment entrepreneur and philanthropist Dentaa Amoateng MBE has urged more Ghanaians in the creative industry to join the Recording Academy, the body that votes for the Grammy Awards.
Speaking in a recent interview on Hitz FM, Dentaa explained that the Grammy winners are not selected by executives or external panels but by the voting members of the Academy itself — musicians, producers, engineers, and other music professionals.
“If more of us from Ghana are part of the Recording Academy, our influence grows,” she said. “The Grammy Awards are decided by members who vote, not by some secret committee. So if we want to see Ghanaian artists win, we need more Ghanaians in the room.”
Dentaa, who has long championed African representation in global entertainment spaces, noted that increasing Ghana’s presence within the Academy would give the country a stronger voice in international music recognition.
She added that joining the Academy is possible for qualified Ghanaian music professionals — including artists, songwriters, producers, and sound engineers — who meet its membership criteria.
“It’s not just about hoping we win Grammys,” she added. “It’s about participation. We must take up our place where the decisions are made.”
Her comments come as African artists continue to gain global acclaim, with recent Grammy wins by Nigerian and South African musicians highlighting the continent’s growing influence. Dentaa believes Ghana has the same potential, provided the local industry becomes more involved in the structures that shape global recognition.
