Dennis Miracles Aboagye Arrested in GH¢55M Fraud Probe
ACCRA, GHANA – The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has thrown Ghana political landscape into a spin following the dramatic weekend arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralization (IMCCoD).
Aboagye, a high-profile communicator for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), was intercepted by immigration officials at the Kotoka International Airport on Sunday morning. He now faces intense interrogation over the alleged misappropriation, diversion, and outright theft of roughly GH¢55 million in public funds.
The Airport Interception
The arrest was the climax of a quiet week-long manhunt. According to EOCO sources, a “Stop Order” had been placed on Aboagye a week prior to prevent him from leaving the jurisdiction. Unbeknownst to investigators, he was already out of the country.
The trap sprung the moment his flight touched down in Accra on Sunday. Held overnight by immigration authorities, Aboagye was handed over to EOCO operatives first thing Monday morning, who immediately escorted him to his properties for extensive search operations.
Inside the GH¢55 Million Audit
At the heart of the scandal is a scathing forensic audit of the IMCCoD, covering the period between August 1, 2022, and February 2, 2025.
The audit reportedly paints a grim picture of systemic financial abuse. EOCO’s investigation targets Aboagye alongside the committee’s former accountant, Gerald Appiah, on a list of allegations that includes conspiracy to steal, money laundering, causing financial loss to the State, and the abuse of public office for private profit.
In a significant twist, EOCO officials confirmed that the co-accused accountant, Gerald Appiah, has already begun “voluntarily refunding” portions of the disputed money. However, state investigators have made it clear that these partial payments will not halt the criminal prosecutions.
The GH¢50 Million Bail Debate
By Monday evening, EOCO administrative doors opened to grant Aboagye bail—but under terms his legal team has slammed as virtually impossible.
The agency set bail at a staggering GH¢50 million, requiring three sureties, two of whom must provide verified, documented landed property to match the valuation.
Speaking to reporters outside the EOCO headquarters, Aboagye’s lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, did not mince words, calling the conditions an indirect way of keeping his client behind bars.
“How is he going to post the bail bonds?” Atta Akyea protested. “GH¢50 million, three sureties, two to be justified. How can it be met? Where are you going to find properties worth GH¢50 million tonight?”
Political Backlash on the Streets
As news of the detention spread, the front gates of the EOCO headquarters quickly turned into a political flashpoint.
Dozens of furious NPP youth, led by high-ranking party executives including National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) and National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, swarmed the facility. Demanding Aboagye’s immediate release and accusing the state agency of high-handedness, the crowd locked horns with heavily armed police deployed to maintain order.
With Aboagye remaining in custody as his legal team scrambles to secure his release, this investigation is rapidly morphing from a financial audit into one of the most explosive political trials of the year.
