China Sentences Former Defence Ministers to Death Over Corruption Scandal

In a dramatic development that has shocked the global political and military community, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu have reportedly been sentenced to death by Chinese authorities over charges linked to bribery and corruption.

The verdict marks one of the most severe punishments handed down against high-ranking military officials in modern Chinese history, highlighting Xi Jinping’s continued crackdown on corruption within the country’s armed forces and political elite.

According to reports, both former ministers were found guilty of abusing their powerful positions for financial gain, accepting massive bribes, and engaging in corrupt activities that undermined the integrity of the Chinese military establishment. Chinese prosecutors described the crimes as “extremely serious,” claiming the actions caused significant damage to national interests and public trust.

Wei Fenghe served as China’s Defence Minister from 2018 to 2023 and was considered one of the most influential military figures in the country. Li Shangfu later succeeded him but faced investigations shortly after disappearing from public view amid growing allegations of misconduct.

The case forms part of a wider anti-corruption campaign that has swept through China’s military ranks in recent years. Under President Xi Jinping, several senior officials, generals, and government figures have been investigated, dismissed, or prosecuted as Beijing seeks to tighten discipline and loyalty within the armed forces.

Political analysts say the sentencing sends a strong warning to officials across China that corruption at the highest levels will not be tolerated. Others believe the move also reflects deeper power struggles within the leadership of the Chinese military and ruling establishment.

The international community continues to closely monitor developments, as both Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu previously played major roles in China’s defence diplomacy and military strategy on the global stage.

The sentencing further reinforces China’s reputation for imposing harsh penalties in major corruption cases, especially those involving national security and state institutions.
