The contribution, formalized in Abuja, is expected to strengthen relief operations in several northern states, including Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Borno, Taraba, and Adamawa.

Speaking at the handover, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu, expressed solidarity with flood-affected communities and emphasized China’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in times of crisis.

He noted that both nations have recently endured natural disasters, underscoring the importance of cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

Meanwhile, the federal government of Nigeria has intensified preparedness measures this year, including issuing early warnings, mapping high-risk zones, and stockpiling relief materials. Officials say these steps represent progress compared to previous years of reactive disaster management.

However, experts caution that while donations and short-term relief bring immediate relief to victims, Nigeria continues to face recurring devastation from floods.

Without long-term investments in drainage infrastructure, dam management, and sustainable urban planning, the country risks remaining in a cycle of disaster response rather than building true resilience.
