As anticipation builds for the next edition of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF), the festival has successfully concluded the final instalment of its 2025 Conversation Series – a platform designed to empower creatives and strengthen Cape Town’s music ecosystem.
The closing session proved as insightful and impactful as the first, centring on the importance of communication across all areas of the music industry.
The evening opened with a thought-provoking question: Are artists expected to have two sources of income while pursuing a career in music? Many attendees shared that, while juggling multiple jobs was not ideal, it had become a necessity in order to sustain their livelihoods.

As the discussion deepened, communication and transparency emerged as central themes. Artists, venues, and promoters highlighted the need for clearer channels of communication, with several creatives expressing ongoing concerns about disparities in information regarding professional practice within the industry.
A particularly alarming issue raised was the continued lack of willingness to pay artists, including arrangements reminiscent of the historical “dop system”, where alcohol is offered as a form of payment. Participants voiced strong concerns about this harmful practice, noting its damaging impact on artist dignity, the integrity of Cape Town’s music culture, and the sustainability of the broader creative community.

The session concluded with constructive dialogue on implementing sustainable practices to ensure the long-term development of local artists. Suggestions included establishing more transparent booking processes and standardising fair payment structures to support the growth of Cape Town’s vibrant music scene.
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival remains committed to creating platforms that spark dialogue, champion artists, and promote positive transformation within the industry. The Conversation Series forms part of the festival’s broader mission to uplift the creative community and ensure the future of music in Cape Town remains strong, fair, and thriving.
