🏗️ GHANA’S BIG PUSH: THE ROAD TO DEVELOPMENT OR DEBT? 🇬🇭 - Voice of Africa Broadcast & Media Production
Skip to content

The 2026 Budget is officially in motion, and the focus is clear: Roads. With a massive $2.8 billion (30.8 billion GHS) allocated for infrastructure this year, the “Big Push” is no longer just a plan—it’s happening.

Here is the breakdown of the loans and the projects currently reshaping our landscape:

💰 THE FUNDING: Where is the money coming from?

To get these projects back on track after the debt restructuring, the government has secured and renegotiated deals with:

• EXIM Bank of India: Bilateral agreements signed in March 2026 have unlocked funding for stalled projects.

• World Bank & AfDB: Providing critical climate-resilient infrastructure financing.

• 7% Revenue Ringfencing: The government is now using 7% of non-oil tax revenue to ensure these loans are repaid, aiming to avoid future defaults.

🚧 THE PROJECTS: What’s being built right now?

• Accra-Tema Motorway: Currently 29% complete—expanding to a 10-lane expressway.

• Takoradi – Agona Nkwanta: Making progress at 63% complete, including three major bridges.

• Adenta – Dodowa Road: Sitting at 49% completion to ease commuter traffic.

• The Eastern Corridor: Work is active on the 39.2km Dufor-Asikuma stretch to boost North-South trade.

🧐 THE VERDICT

The government is betting big on “Arterial Roads” to jumpstart the economy. Is this the infrastructure breakthrough we’ve been waiting for, or are we digging a deeper debt hole?
